"Drink Water,
Do I Really Have To?"
My eldest daughter used to hate to drink water. It took me weeks to get her to drink even a little cup. She is drinking a lot more now.
And like I said on my page on how to Love Your Body, the adult human body contains enough water to fill a tank of ten-gallon capacity. In men about 72% of the body mass is water. This value is about 68% in women due to a higher proportion of body fat. This is the total body water.
You need water for a lot of biochemical processes, which are constantly going on in your body. Water carries nutrients throughout your physical system. It helps keep your body temperature optimal and gets rid of any waste products.
You lose water everyday through perspiration, urination and your breathing. You can go on a hunger strike and survive for weeks, but if you don't drink any water or beverages containing water, you're dead within a few days.
Foods, like vegetables and fruits contain water, but that amount is absolutely not enough to sustain your body´s needs.
When I was in my teenage years I always felt tired and depressed. When I started to drink more water, I noticed a big change in my energy levels. I felt so much better.
So, YES you need to drink water.
Now for another big question:
"Tap or Bottled Water?"
I read on this website by the NRDC that "Most bottled water apparently is of good quality, but some contains contamination; it should not automatically be assumed to be purer or safer than most tap water." They tested different brands of bottled water and this was their conclusion. They do say that out of more than 700 brands sold in the U.S. they only tested 103 and they only tested one to three lots of each brand.
I have to say that after reading all this information on water quality, I have decided that I am going to choose the lesser of two evils.
It is very important to drink water, so choose the kind of water you feel comfortable with. Tap water could be contaminated, but so could bottled water. Choosing the lesser of two evils here means that drinking any kind of water is better than not drinking any water at all.
I prefer to drink bottled water, because of the taste. Furthermore the quality of the tap water here in Kuwait is very low. Every household has a water filter. This filter doesn't really do anything for the taste though, so I just feel more comfortable with mineral water.
"So, How Much Should I Drink?"
Drinking at least 6 to 8 glasses in a day should be enough. That means that you can drink at least one glass about every 1 1/2 hours. It's best to drink water in between snacks and meals. At least 15 minutes before or after you eat.
If you're not used to drinking that much water, take my advice: Don't start drinking the 6 to 8 glasses all at once. If you suddenly start drinking a lot of water you'll be in and out of the toilet the whole day. Your body is so happy to get the extra water that it'll use it to get rid of any toxins it can before you change your mind and stop drinking. Once it's used to getting water on a regular basis, you won't be going that often. At least that's my experience.
So drink water and feel great about yourself!
