Let's Feel Great, Issue #030 --, can you stand up for yourself?
September 01, 2009
Part of having a healthy self esteem is being able to stand up for yourself. Feeling worthy and communicating what you want, is very important to be able to feel great about yourself.
Great Quote“"NO" is a complete sentence!”
"Can you stand up for yourself?"Oh YES, "NO" is a complete sentence!
Have you ever noticed how you're often trying to justify your decisions or wishes. Your mother, for example, asks you to come over to visit the next weekend, but you can't stand her new husband. Instead of just saying "no", we often feel we have to let the other person know why. Trust me, other people don't really care, unless they ask you "why?". Often they already know the answer.
Most of my life I struggled with saying no. I felt that if I'd say no, the other person wouldn't like me and that felt like the end of the world. And to be honest I couldn't imagine somebody not liking me, I'm such a nice person. :-)
Now, after realizing that it doesn't matter whether somebody likes me or not, that I just have to do and say what I want to do and say, I feel so much better. I feel free.
This doesn't mean I go round offending people. Being assertive also doesn't mean you always get what you want. At least letting the other party know what's on your mind, instead of getting depressed because your needs where not met, is a step in the right direction. It's a way to keep your personal power, instead of giving it away and letting other people control you.
At the end of the day it all boils down to loving yourself. I would really suggest you look yourself in the eyes daily and say "I love you". It has worked wonders for me and I think it will do the same for you. What have you got to lose? You only have feeling better about yourself to gain..
